CUBA – Plein Air Magazine Publisher’s Invitational, February 6 – 13, 2016 was a historic opportunity for artists to capture Cuba at this moment in time! Once the call went out for travelers, artist Betty Huang, owner of Studio B Gallery and President of the Working Artists Forum, was so enthusiastic she encouraged Ted Mueller of Ted Mueller Photography to join her with their respective spouses for this unique event.

This group of 100 painters and non-painters from all over the country and England were well prepared for the experience of a life time! While each of the travelers had their own vision of Cuba, the reality is almost impossible to describe. Beautiful certainly, with buildings that rival those of Paris or St. Petersburg, but beauty that has been neglected since the revolution.

Publisher's Invitational events usually follow a format of continuous painting with no formal agenda's or workshops. In this case the concept was adjusted to afford the artists the maximum Cuban experience. Most of our time was spent in central or old Havana with short excursions to Cojimar, a Hemingway favorite, an abandoned sugar plantation and, not to neglect the nightlife, The Buena Vista Social Club and The Tropicana. All notions of Cuba lived up to our expectations, the old cars, the architecture, the music, food, and especially the mojitos!

What was unexpected was the warm welcome from the pride filled Cubans who love their country and their heritage. This was indeed a historic week! Over 700 paintings and hundreds of photographs were completed with each artist capturing their unique interpretation of the Cuban experience.

Join us at Studio B Gallery Reception, Friday, April 1st 5pm for “Colors of Cuba” Exhibit. Betty and guest artists Ted, Hai-Ou Hou, and Beth Bathe will showcase some of their works and share their personal experiences. Cuban food, music and refreshments will be provided by The Art of Cooking.
